St. Patrick`s Day
St. Patricks Day in DublinThe one national holiday that is celebrated in more countries around the world than any other, St. Patrick’s Day is the day when everyone is a little bit Irish!
Believed to have been born in the 4th Century, St Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, is credited with bringing Christianity to Ireland.Ireland’s National holiday, St Patrick’s Day is celebrated on March 17th.
Cities and small towns alike celebrate with parades, the “wearing of the green," Irish music, food and drink. Dublin stages the biggest and most extravagant St. Patrick's Day Parade. The route for the Dublin St. Patrick's Day Parade is 2.5 kilometres long and starts just around the corner from The Belvedere Hotel at Parnell Square moves down to O'Connell Street, over the River Liffey via O'Connell Bridge before finally finishing at St. Patrick's Cathedral. Marching bands from all over Ireland, Europe and the USA take part in the parade and the bands are extremely competitive when it comes to their costumes and dance routines. A typical Dublin St. Patrick's Day Parade also features many extravagantly decorated floats. It’s estimated that two thirds of Dublin's one million strong population and more than a hundred thousand visitors from all over Ireland and overseas come to Dublin to see the parade.
On St. Patrick's Day we Dubliners wear something green and watch the parade before “drowning the shamrock”, having a pint in one of the numerous pubs along the parade route. The parade lasts approximately two hours. Festivities spill over into Dublin's pubs after the parade has finished.
Many events associated with the St. Patrick's Festival on the day of the parade, are free of charge. Pubs and restaurants do not generally increase their prices on the day, but you should be prepared to experience longer queues than usual. The Dublin St Patrick's Festival 2014 takes place over four days beginning on March 14th. For more information on the planned events click here.
